States Senator Robert C. Byrd rose from poverty to be a powerful force
in the United States Government. He has been called "the soul
of the Senate" and was named the "West Virginian of the
Century." He worked as a welder, gas station attendant, produce
boy and a butcher, but he will be remembered as a senator who was a
servant to his state and to the nation.
