MotionMasters’ crews sauntered the streets of the U.S. capital and traveled cross-country to capture compelling interviews from congressional leaders, historians and Senator Byrd himself to pen the story of the orphan who became orator. MotionMasters partnered with the West Virginia Humanities Council to produce and distribute a three-part educational package entitled “The Soul of the Senate: A Documentary of U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd. ” Along with a 60-minute documentary, the package includes this website and a teacher’s manual. Complimentary copies have been provided to all secondary schools and libraries in the State of West Virginia.

Students can explore Byrd’s passionate devotion to the Constitution and his reverence for the Senate. They will examine the separation of powers through Byrd’s historic opposition to the line item veto as well as his willingness to stand on his convictions even in the face of political and public disfavor.

Numerous businesses, government and individual sponsors have proudly supported this educational project. Principal donors include: American Electric Power, The Dominion Foundation, Mylan Pharmaceuticals and Verizon. The project attracted the attention of nationally acclaimed actor, James Brolin, who narrates the documentary.

The documentary premiered May 28th, 2005 at the Clay Center and was also broadcast on West Virginia Public Television. The piece is up for national review by PBS.
